When MAKE magazine asked me to contribute to an issue with an Architectural theme, this was the story I knew I had to send them. I wrote the first draft of it at Hedgebrook, an all-women’s writing residency in Washington State, back in 2006. It’s based on the women I grew up with in Alexandria, Egypt, whose families moved from Upper Egypt to the cities to work as Bawabeen- door men and women. Aisha, the narrator of this story, is bold, a single mom who wants to reconnect with her sexuality and to generally have more excitement and agency in her life. Hope you enjoy!
